Housemade Holiday: The Story Behind the Spice
Posted on November 13 2025,
Every season has a distinct flavor that holds a special place in our minds and makes an appearance right when we miss it most —the one we're excited about is the flavors of the winter season. For us, the holidays taste like warm, spiced coziness with a dash of nostalgic wonder. And that is precisely what Housemade Holiday captures.
Before it became our favorite flavor of the season, however, it started as a friend's creative idea and an out-of-the-box experiment in the Burkholder's kitchen.
Where it All Began
The story begins with a moment between friends. Robyn, our CEO and the oldest of the Burkholder clan, sat with her friend Marla Kurtz over a delicious cup of coffee. Marla shared that her favorite way to spice up her morning coffee was to drop a cinnamon stick into the basket of coffee grounds before brewing. This got Robyn thinking about the possibilities of adding flavor without any artificial ingredients. Just real, ground spices blended with our freshly roasted coffee.
The idea was so exciting that Robyn knew she couldn't wait to try it out for herself. Thanksgiving was approaching, and the Burkholder family set their sights on creating a coffee that paired perfectly with your post-dinner pumpkin pie. They looked to quintessential spice blends for inspiration. The goal wasn't to mimic just one flavor, but to capture a feeling. Something that tasted like comfort, warmth, and home. The experimentation began, and after much trial and error, Housemade Holiday was born.
The Flavor of the Season
When it first appeared on Twin Valley Coffee shelves in 2018, it was well-received almost immediately. It was seen as a celebration of what makes coffee special in the first place: connection. The label was festive and intentional, the name was inviting and curious, and the flavor? A perfect symphony of holiday joy.
Over the years, Housemade Holiday quickly became what pumpkin spice is to fall. It marks the start of the season. It's not about a single spice. It's about the moment you take that first sip and feel blanketed in the spirit of the season. The mission was achieved.
A Cup That Feels Like Home
Housemade Holiday has become a Twin Valley Coffee tradition —and for many of us, a personal one, too. It's that first bag you grab to beckon in the season of togetherness.
So whether you're brewing it for your family gathering or sipping it quietly while the snow falls outside, this is your reminder to slow down, savor, and enjoy every cozy cup. Because Housemade Holiday isn't just coffee, it's Christmas in a mug. 🎄☕
